AMERICAN TEACHER – Synopsis:
Directors Vanessa Roth and Brian McGinn (81min, USA, 2011) - Unrated
The tremendous need for passionate, qualified, and dedicated teachers is one of few
unassailable truths in the often contentious national education debate. Nonetheless, the
teaching profession draws such appallingly low salaries that nearly a third of all public school
teachers are forced find supplemental employment to make ends meet. Chronicling the
stories of four teachers living and working in disparate urban and rural areas throughout the
country, American Teacher reveals the frustrating realities of today’s educators, the difficulty
of attracting talented new teachers and why so many of our best teachers choose to leave the
profession altogether. The feature-length documentary is directed by Academy Award
Winner Vanessa Roth and Brian McGinn, and produced by Nínive Calegari, Dave Eggers, and
Vanessa Roth. The film includes a musical score by Thao Nguyen and is narrated by Matt
Damon.
