Guilty Plea in Stabbing Death from Man Who Fled Country

The defendant was located in Jamaica and brought back to face charges in the 1996 murder in Pelham Manor.

PELHAM, NY - A man who fled the country after stabbing a fellow caddy at a golf course pled guilty Monday to manslaughter.

Michael Cousins, also known as Gifton Cousins, 48, faces between five and 25 years in state prison for the 1996 death of Jason Campbell.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty said Cousins pled guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter.

Cousins fled the country after the stabbing that happened September 12, 1996, at Pelham Country Club in Pelham Manor. He was located last year in Kingston, Jamaica.

He was taken into custody and brought back to Westchester in October 2015.

Cousins and the victim got into a dispute at the country club, where they were both caddies.

During the argument Cousins pulled out a knife and stabbed Campbell once in the chest.

Campbell stumbled into the Pro Shop at the golf course and collapsed.

An ambulance was called, but Campbell later died at what was then called New Rochelle Hospital.

Cousins continues to be held in jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 9, 2016.
