After he was stabbed, the victim ran to the apartment complex and shut the rear gate to get away from Barnett, who was still wielding the knife.
When police responded to Benitez, he was bleeding heavily. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and died in surgery two hours later.
Based on descriptions from witnesses, Barnett was located at a nearby gas station and was placed under arrest.
The knife was recovered on the roof of a nearby building.
Barnett is being held in Westchester County Jail in Valhalla.
He is scheduled to be sentenced March 1 and faces a maximum 25 years in prison.
