Interactive 'Shofar Factory' To Bring High Holiday Traditions to Life at the Pelham Art Center
Kids to craft and sound the ram's horn in preparation for the Jewish New Year.

Families are invited to the Pelham Art Center on Sunday, September 21st, for a special day of Rosh Hashanah themed fun in anticipation of the upcoming Jewish new year.
The whole community is invited to craft their very own shofar, or ram’s horn, one of the oldest wind instruments known to man, at the event next Sunday. Hand crafted from a ram’s horn, the shofar is traditionally blown during synagogue services to herald the beginning of the Jewish New Year. This year, the special workshop that has travelled the world, will make a stop in Pelham to show participants how to craft their very own shofar from scratch.
Lucky participants will get to drill, sand, shellac and polish their own horns to take home as well as learn how to blow the traditional sounds using the horn.
The event promises to be a day of fun and creativity for Pelham families with a slew of other activities on the menu, including designing Rosh Hashanah cards to send to family and friends, and decorating beautiful honey dishes to use during the festival.
Rabbi Levi Groner, and his wife Chaya Groner, of Chabad of Pelham, will be hosting the event next Sunday and said they look forward to bringing this one-of-a-kind workshop to local children and teens.
“We’re very excited to kick off the beginning of the school year and the Jewish new year with this event. This workshop has been on the road in cities all over the world and we’re thrilled to bring it the community in Pelham as well,” he said. “The sounding of the Shofar is really a central part of the High Holidays. We’re sure that giving the kids the opportunity to make their own shofars will make the new year celebrations to life.” he said.
Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew for “head of the year” is celebrated annually this time of year and signals the beginning of the Jewish calendar year. It is traditionally commemorated with Synagogue services, where the shofar is blown during prayers as well as with celebratory meals together with family and friends. This year it will take place from Wednesday evening, September, 24th through Friday evening, September, 26th.
The event will run from 1:30pm - 3:30pm on Sunday, September 21st, 2014 at the Pelham Art Center, 155 Fifth Avenue. Admission, including refreshments and activities are free, and creating a shofar is $10 per shofar.
