Low Unemployment around Pelham: New NY Data

PELHAM, NY — In the Hudson Valley, Columbia and Putnam were among the state's counties with the lowest unemployment rates in July, according to new data from the New York Department of Labor.
Overall, New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.7 percent for July 16, according to new data from the Department of Labor. The statewide unemployment rate was unchanged from June’s level of 4.7 percent, and remained below the comparable U.S. rate of 4.9 percent in July 2016.
New York’s statewide unemployment rate remained at its lowest level since August 2007.
The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in July 2016 include:

• Hamilton County (3.0%)
• Columbia County (3.5%)
• Saratoga County (3.6%)
• Ontario County (3.9%)
• Genesee County (4.0%)
• Nassau County (4.0%)
• Putnam County (4.0%)
• Tompkins County (4.0%)
• Washington County (4.0%)
• Yates County (4.0%)

Compare that to other counties in the lower Hudson Valley:

• Dutchess (4.2%)
• Greene (4.6%)
• Orange (4.3%)
• Rockland (4.2%)
• Ulster (4.4%)
• Westchester (4.3%)

As for year-over-year statistics, the state's metropolitan areas showed strength over the past year, according to the DOL statistics published Aug. 23.

• The Dutchess-Putnam metro area unemployment rate dropped in the past year, to 4.1 percent in July 2016 from 4.7 percent in July 2015.
• In Kingston, unemployment dropped to 4.4 percent from 5.1 percent.
• The Orange-Rockland-Westchester area unemployment rate dropped to 4.3 percent from 4.9 percent.

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
