Martha Stewart's Not the Only One Who Loves Her Drone

The gardening goddess recently posted photos on her blog that were taken by her Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

Last month Martha Stewart posted a blog on her website featuring beautiful aerial photos of her farm. The photos were taken by a DJI Phantom flying camera, owned and operated by Dominic Arena, one of Stewart’s security detail.

TIME Magazine caught wind of the aerial photo gallery and asked the lifestyle guru to write an essay on the topic. You can read Stewart’s essay by clicking here. The aerial photography was made possible by the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which has been gaining in popularity recently.

In the TIME Magazine article Stewart said she was given the drone as a birthday gift and was immediately hooked. Her first experience with the device was at the beach in Maine.

“In near silence, the drone rose, hovered, and dove, silently and surreptitiously photographing us and the landscape around us. The photos and video were stunning. By assuming unusual vantage points, the drone allowed me to “see” so much more of my surroundings than usual. The view I was “seeing” on my iPad with the help of the drone would have otherwise been impossible without the use of a private plane, helicopter, or balloon. With any of those vehicles, I would have needed a telephoto lens, and all of them would have made an unacceptable commotion on the beach.”

Drones are now being used by hobbyists, gardeners and even private investigators. The New York Post recently reported that local private eyes were using drones to catch cheating spouses. In July, Patch reported a man used his drone to peep into windows in New York. In Georgia, Midtown Patch recently reported that a member of the Atlanta City Council is seeking to create clearer guidelines and regulations for the operation of drones in the state.
