NYC Man Arraigned in Mount Vernon Shooting Death
The victim was riding his bicycle when the accused started shooting at him.

A New York City resident faces charges in the fatal shooting of Charles Smith in Mount Vernon.
Bobby Jackson, 34, of West 122nd St. in New York, was arraigned Friday and pled not guilty to the following felony charges, according to Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty:
- One count of second-degree murder
- One count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- One count of first-degree reckless endangerment
- Two counts of tampering with physical evidence
McCarty said at approximately 5:23 p.m. April 17, 2016, Smith was riding his bicycle down East 3rd Street in the area of Union Avenue.

Police said Jackson spotted Smith and started jogging after him.
Two blocks later, at East 3rd Street and South 1st Avenue, Jackson allegedly began shooting at Smith, firing multiple shots, one of which hit him in the back.

The bullet ripped through Smith’s kidney, colon, liver and a major artery to the lung. He fell off his bicycle and smashed the left side of his head on the concrete pavement.
Smith was dead within minutes.
Police said, at the time of the shooting, there were multiple pedestrians on the street who were in the line of fire.
Jackson is being held in jail. His next scheduled court appearance is June 7, 2016.
