Pelham HS Students Inducted into National Honor Society

Over 100 students inducted into the National Honor Society's Knight and Lamp Chapter on November 29.

From Pelham Memorial High School: More than 100 PMHS juniors and seniors were inducted into the Knight and Lamp chapter of the National Honor Society on Tuesday, Nov. 29

NHS is a prestigious group of distinguished students across the United States. Joining the program this year were 96 juniors and 10 seniors.

To be inducted, PMHS students are required to maintain an unweighted cumulative average of at least an 89, donate one study period per week to tutor in the learning center, complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service to the school and/or community during school year and uphold the other qualities of the National Honor Society including Character and Leadership.

In addition to the new members, 67 NHS members who were inducted in 2015 were also honored.

The ceremony included speeches by Class of 2017 NHS President and Vice President Jonathan Salama and Amanpreet Singh and Class of 2018 NHS President and Vice President Emily Xue and Harrison Harvey. Other speakers included PMHS Principal Jeannine Clark, NHS Advisor Mariana Cordero, Superintendent Dr. Peter Giarrizzo, Board of Education President Marianne Gilland and Director of Science and Math Dr. Thomas Callahan, who delivered the keynote address in which he performed “Dawning of the Day” on his bagpipes.

“Life gets crazy, there are times now and there will be times in the future when you’re stressed, overwhelmed and maybe even a little in over your head,” Dr. Callahan said. “Be mindful of yourself and how you best handle stress. Find an outlet, something you love, and find some time to decompress with it.

“When you think back to this evening, in addition to recalling all of the hard work it took to get you here, I hope you remember this simple message: ‘Find your own path to introspection,’ I truly believe it will lead to a healthier and happier you.”
