Pelham Kids Trade Backpacks for Dancing Shoes at Local Ballet Center

Campers at Pelham's Ballet Arts spend their summer learning a range of dance disciplines.

Summer is in full swing and Pelham kids are full of energy to take on the varying activities the community has to offer. This season, Patch will highlight some of the standout gems that are keeping kids busy and learning all summer long.

For our first stop, we strolled over to 504 Fifth Ave. to check out what the budding dancers at have been up to. But, the instructors haven’t let the name of studio preclude the kinds of teachings they serve up. Students can try a multitude of disciplines, including Chinese, Irish Step, African, Brazilian, Salsa and Indian. Those who aren’t so keen on grooving can partake in theater or voice lessons.

“No two days are ever the same,” remarked Sheran Daniele, founder and artistic director of Ballet Arts. She has more than 30 years of dance experience.

When Patch hit the floor, some campers were just about to begin their hip-hop class, to perfect their floor positioning, transitions, and movement.

Students, like Scarsdale residents Erin and her younger sister, Taylor, come from all over Westchester to train.

“I really like dancing. It doesn’t matter what kind it is,” Erin remarked. “I like dancing because I like the music and using the props. In Chinese dancing, we use the fans for props. I like Ballet Arts camp because we dance so many different styles.”

Deryn, a hip-hop enthusiast, agrees.

“I love dancing because it’s so much fun,” Deryn said. “It’s fun because we can do all kind of styles. My favorite style is hip hop because it’s fun and we really use movement.”

Both newbies and those with years of experience are encouraged to explore dancing in a creative way, to find the style that speaks to them.

“My favorite dance is ballet,” said Kimberly who’s been honing her skill for five years. “I love to do pirouettes and spins.”
