Piecaken: the Perfect Complement to Turducken

A dessert that's wowing the Internet is brilliant and terrifying in complexity and calories.

Distractify calls it “the latest homage to gluttony our species has created.”

The San Antonio Current says, “The Piecaken is everything you want in a dessert, and it’s here to destroy you.”

It’s a pie baked inside a cake.

But why stop there, if you’re looking for that perfect Thanksgiving weekend dessert to go along with leftovers? Why not bake a couple of different pies in a couple of different cakes, layer them, and slather that sucker with a cream-cheese icing. Or whipped cream. Use a trowel, why not?

Some of the more sane-sounding combinations: an apple pie inside a layer of spice cake; a cherry pie inside a layer of chocolate cake; a pumpkin pie inside a layer of carrot cake; a pecan pie inside a layer of yellow cake.

Makes sense, sort of, if you’re the kind of person who only wants a bit of all the pie possibilities on Thanksgiving. Plus cake. Plus icing.

Susan O’Keefe, owner of Baked by Susan in Croton on Hudson, laughed when asked about it. The Westchester shop hasn’t received any orders for a piecaken this holiday season -- so far.

“I don’t really get it, it’s not my favorite,” she said. “But I love apple pie more than anything. And I like cake. So why not?”
