Digging Out Is On Wednesday's Agenda

The winter storm is likely to cause widespread problems throughout the region today.

Here's some suggestions for a snow day and tips for getting all of us through it:

1. Stay home, if you can. The is warning of service disruptions if the snowfall exceeds 10 inches. During the Christmas weekend blizzard, the LIRR suffered major service suspensions. Check ahead before attempting a trip to New York City. If you must drive: slow down.

2. Organize the kids. Let them sleep in today, but then send them out with a shovel and let them do the heavy work. People with heart issues, such as high blood pressure, shouldn't be experts say.

3. Check on an Sometimes, big storms serve to confuse or intimidate older residents. They may be out of staples and need help with a store run. They might have suffered a power outage. Check in with them today. Send the kids.

4. Shovel out the neighborhood In the wake of the big blizzard, firefighters and the Plainview Water District requested help with clearing a wide path at the base of the community's hydrants. The simple act of community awareness can save time and even lives in a fire. (Another great job for the kids!)

5. If you can, move your car off the street. The needs streets to be cleared so plowing operations go smoothly.
