Nassau Police Officer Killed Decades Ago On LIE, Memorialized

PLAINVIEW, NY —A police officer who was struck by a drunken driver decades ago on the Long Island Expressway is being memorialized.

Police Officer Daniel J. Greer Memorial Bridge is officially being unveiled on Friday at the crossing of Sunnyside Boulevard near Exit 46.

It was nine days before Christmas in 1979 when Greer, 44, was fatally hit while ticketing a female motorist during the daytime.

According to the New York Times report at the time, a pickup truck struck the woman's small car and dragged Greer 150 feet.

Assemblyman Charles Lavine was one of the sponsors of the bridge naming bill in Albany.
Greer was a 13-year veteran of the Nassau police department.
