Pasadena Writing Program Brings Visitors

Garden City School Officials Observe Elementary Literacy Curriculum in Action

In a collaborative effort, Pasadena Elementary School hosted officials from the Garden City School District on November 17th to observe how the school’s writing curriculum is being implemented in the classroom.

Pasadena’s students are learning under the Teacher’s College Advancing Literacy Writing Program, which POB has been using since the 2019-2020 school year. Through discussions with Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District officials and classroom observations, the Garden City administrators saw first-hand how some of the District’s youngest students are introduced to writing and storytelling concepts through this program. The visit was one of the many ways the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District collaborates with school districts across Nassau County to share knowledge and research the best-possible classroom techniques.

“As we continue to advance the science of education, one of the key ways we do this is through constant collaboration with our neighboring school districts,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary O’Meara. “This visit is an excellent example of that collaboration, and we look to continue learning from each other to push the envelope of instruction.”

As part of the visit, the Garden City officials visited Nicole Carroll’s fourth grade classroom, where they observed how elaboration prompts are used to push further thinking about concepts students are introducing in their storytelling. Then, the group headed to Jillian Elvidge’s kindergarten classroom, where students learned different ways to assemble a story and what concepts make sense when placed together. Finally, in Ms. Michaela Carnesi’s second grade class the officials saw how students are tasked with story planning and brainstorming for story ideas.
