Plainview-Old Bethpage 4th Grader is Sew Inspiring

Pasadena Elementary Student Makes Masks to Stop the Spread of COVID-19

Plainview, N.Y. —A 4th grade student from the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is helping a local Plainview nursing home fight the battle against COVID-19. Rebecca Wallenstein has found a way to reach out and help others while remaining at home, adhering to social distancing imperatives while schools are closed. The Pasadena Elementary School student started making masks for health care providers and nursing home residents to help prevent them from contracting the virus.

“Rebecca is such a bright young student and the school is incredibly proud of her hard work during these uncertain times,” said Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “We are delighted by her work inside and outside of the classroom. She is a light in all of the darkness we are facing, and this is a great way to bring the community together while we all practice social distancing.”

Rebecca has a long-standing love for sewing—she even asked her parents for a sewing machine for her eighth birthday. She has taken lessons and spent time at summer camp perfecting her craft. For this particular activity, Rebecca worked with her mother in an assembly line fashion. Her mother pinned all of the masks and Rebecca sewed them together.

Rebecca is calling her project the I Love Eva Law, after her grandmother and Governor Cuomo’s Matilda’s Law. She has expressed that she would like to continue crafting these face masks for her friends and neighbors who are in need of them to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
