POBJFK Parkland memorial is not enough

POBJFK High School student shares his thoughts on the memorial for the Parkland shooting and what more should be done

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Tyler Goldstein, and I am currently a junior at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. On Wednesday from 10:00am to 10:17am POBJFK held a memorial in honor of those who lost their lives at the Parkland school shooting last February. While what our school did was admirable, a memorial alone is not enough to instigate real change. I send my thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of those who were killed, but thoughts and prayers are not the only thing that must be done to help prevent these tragedies from ever occurring again.
Gun control laws must become stricter nationwide. We should raise the minimum age necessary to possess a gun, we should require psychological tests to be administered when someone attempts to purchase a gun, and every year we should implement obligatory checkups to ensure the owner is still fit to possess a firearm. Bump stocks should be permanently outlawed domestically throughout the U.S. It’s common sense.
A large part of the nationwide Parkland student movement is to send a message to every member of Congress that the progressive youth of America do not support the NRA. I cannot speak for all students who attend my high school, but I know that several students at POBJFK are fed up with the lack of successful gun control reform — and we want our voices to be heard. I write to inform you that we are not wholly satisfied with a memorial. We want to do more and will do more in the future to help prevent school shootings.
On April 20th, starting at 10:00am there will be a walkout to protest the inability of lawmakers to pass gun control legislation. I, amongst many other students at POBJFK, plan on participating in this protest. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Tyler Goldstein
