Students and staff at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School celebrated Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd to October 31st. Red Ribbon Week is a national awareness campaign to prevent the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and drugs as well as violence potentially caused by these substances.

The POBMS Health Education Department used the occasion to reinforce the importance of good decision making and the dangers of substance abuse. The theme Red Ribbon Week 2023 was “Be Kind to Your Mind. Stay Drug Free.” Staff gave out Red Ribbon Week bracelets and the school community signed the Bullying and Drug Free Pledge. Simultaneously, the school hosted a building-wide breast cancer awareness spirit week.

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated nationwide each year in honor of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camerena, who was killed by drug traffickers in 1985. Since then, the red ribbon worn by friends and neighbors following his death evolved into a national symbol for educating youth on the dangers of substance abuse.
