PWD Reminds Residents About Required Backflow Device Testing
Residents and Commercial Properties Must Test Their Backflow Devices Annually, Deadline is 12/31/24
Plainview, NY - The Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to remind Plainview-Old Bethpage residents and commercial customers that the New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) and Nassau County Health Department require annual testing of backflow devices. This compliance testing must be performed by a certified backflow tester and completed prior to December 31, 2024 to ensure these devices are functioning properly.
“Backflow testing is a crucial preventative measure for any household or business within Plainview-Old Bethpage,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “By regularly testing backflow prevention devices, our residents are aiding the District’s efforts to prevent unnecessary contaminants from entering our water supply, ensuring that PWD can continue to serve the highest quality of water. The Plainview Water District encourages residents and businesses in POB to support our community by testing backflow devices this year.”
Backflow devices are mechanical double-check valves that prevent water flow from reversing away from a building in the event of a loss of water pressure. A loss in pressure can occur when a fire is being put out or there is a water main break. These devices must be tested annually to make certain they are installed and functioning properly. Residents are required to have a backflow device if they have any of the following: in-ground sprinklers, fire lines, swimming pools, or a private well that is interconnected with the public water supply.
“Ensuring the proper functionality of backflow prevention devices is an essential factor for homes and businesses within Plainview-Old Bethpage,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Emergencies that result in a drop of pressure can occur unexpectedly and at any time. Regular testing of these devices is a simple yet vital step that residents and business owners can take to protect our shared water supply.”
The District encourages all residents and businesses to arrange for a NYSDOH certified backflow tester to conduct their annual backflow test to avoid any potential penalties for noncompliance. The Plainview Water District keeps an up-to-date list of New York State licensed backflow testers on its website, www.plainviewwater.org/resources/backflow/.
“PWD strongly encourages residents and business owners to prioritize annual backflow testing this year,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “This is a straightforward measure that plays a significant role in preserving our water in Plainview. If any Plainview-Old Bethpage residents have any questions about the annual testing process, we urge them to contact the District for additional information or assistance.”
