Students Return to 18th and 19th Century Colonial America
H.B. Mattlin Middle School Students Visit Raynham Hall Museum
Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School 5th grade students recently visited the Raynham Hall Museum, home to one of George Washington’s culper ring of spies during the American Revolution, Robert Townsend. Students learned Townsend helped gather information about the British and relayed it to George Washington to aid the war effort. A costumed guide led students through the historic house and gardens, taught them about colonial American lifestyle, spy craft techniques, and examined artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Prior to the trip, students spent several weeks learning about the American Revolution in the classroom. For example, Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Krowles’s fifth grade classes worked in groups to create picture books telling the story of the war. The hands-on experience helped students understand the importance of learning about this historic event.
