Holidays alter garbage pick-up

Monday Jan. 2 is a national holiday observing New Year's Day, meaning all federal, state and local government offices and facilities will be closed.

In Oyster Bay, that means garbage pick-up will be delayed by one day this week. If your normal pick-up is Monday, garbage collection will be Tuesday, and so on.

Also, Monday Jan. 16 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The same holiday schedule will apply. Residents who normally receive sanitation or recycling collection on Monday will have pickup on Tuesday, Jan. 17;  Tuesday customers have pick-up on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

On both holidays, all town offices will be closed but all parks and ice skating rinks will be open.

Register for Mall Walk Program

Registration is underway for the twice-weekly Mall Walking program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls.

The popular program runs from Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Thursday, Feb. 23, is offered at two locations, Broadway Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. The Hicksville Mall program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator neat the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on the main level near J.C. Penney.

Registration forms can be picked up at Town Hall North and South, Community Park facilities, and at local libraries. For more information, call Nina in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Recreation Department at (516)-797-4125 ext. 3.

Changes listed for town's calendar

There are two changes to note in the Town Board meetings on the 2012 town calendar. The time listed for the Jan. 17 meeting should be 10 a.m., not 7 p.m. The second meeting in February is on Tuesday Feb. 28, not Monday the 27.

And, the Family Fall & Halloween Festival at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park listed on Sept. 22 is a duplication. The actual date of the event is Oct. 6.
