Town of Oyster Bay to Host Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony

This year's ceremony will be held at Tobay Beach

The Town of Oyster Bay will host a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach.

“The Town’s Sept. 11 memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor John Venditto said, in a statement. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.”

The town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

“What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” Venditto said. “The men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.”

Tuesday’s event will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read.

Venditto said he hoped residents will attend the ceremony and “honor the memory of our beloved friends and neighbors who perished on September 11, 2001. Being with our family, friends and neighbors helps us pay tribute to our loved ones and share in the collective memory of those we have lost.”

Families of 9-11 victims interested in being on the town’s mailing list are encouraged to contact the Department of Community & Youth Services at 797-7900.
