Two Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School students were named 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars for their research. Seniors Ethan Hsu and Skylar Cowen were among the 300 students selected as scholars in this prestigious contest, which this year drew more than 1,900 applicants from 627 high schools across 48 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and four other countries.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars are chosen based on their outstanding research, leadership skills, community involvement, commitment to academics, creativity in asking scientific questions and exceptional promise as STEM leaders—as demonstrated through the submission of their original, independent research projects, essays and recommendations.

Ethan’s project, A Novel Application of Intracellular Anandamide Manipulation in C. elegans as a Model for a New Pharmacological Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder, looked into the ways the presence, or lack thereof, of certain molecules in the brain might affect social interactions among people diagnosed with autism.
