2016 Income Tax Deadline: When Is Last Day to File?

The IRS says the quickest way to get a refund is to file electronically and use direct deposit.

If you just looked at the calendar and realized that April 15 is next week, and you panicked, thinking you only have this weekend to get your receipts together and fill out all the forms, you can relax—a bit.

Yes, if you haven’t already started working on your federal and state income tax forms, you are a tad behind, but you actually have an extra weekend before you have to send in your tax returns.

Washington, DC, is celebrating Emancipation Day Friday, April 15, so that pushes the tax-filing deadline to the following Monday, April 18 for most of the nation, including New York, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

For people in Maine and Massachusetts, the deadline is Tuesday, April 19, due to Patriots Day.

The IRS does say that choosing to file electronically and using direct deposit for refunds is still the fastest and safest way to go.

However, if you need to send in a paper return, you can find out where to send it by clicking here.

In New York, the deadline for filing your state return is same as the feds: April 18, according to efile.com, which has a handy countdown clock at the top of the page.

If applying for an extension, the deadline to do so is the same as filing a return, plus you must pay any taxes owed. The deadline to submit returns for which an extension has been grant is October 17, 2016.
