Abinanti Calls for a Stop to START-UP NY

Westchester Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mt. Pleasant) joined the call coming from across the state to stop START-UP NY

Today Westchester Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mt. Pleasant) joined the call coming from across the state to stop START-UP NY.

“START-UP NY has wasted $53 million of taxpayer’s money to garner 76 jobs,” said Assemblyman Abinanti. “$53 million could fill a lot of potholes, restore the budget we cut for people with disabilities or do a lot of other good things for our communities.”

Abinanti’s call comes at a time when a broad coalition across the political spectrum is questioning the wisdom of the START-UP NY program. Groups as disparate as the Working Families Party, the state Conservative Party, the Fiscal Policy Institute and the National Federation of Independent Businesses/NY have called for cessation of the program.

In addition, Assemblyman Robin Schimminger (D-Kenmore), Chair of the Assembly Committee on Economic Development, recently said that START-UP NY’s costs “far outweigh the benefits.”

“It’s no wonder that the Empire State Development Corp. withheld its report on progress since June 2013 until after we passed this year’s budget,” said the Westchester Assemblyman.
