Saturday is expected to be mostly SUMMER! Summer begins at 6:51am Saturday, so by the time you arrive at the Pleasantville Farmers Market spring will be a thing of the past, and a new season of bountiful produce, exciting artisanal foods, and outdoor time with friends will have arrived. Also arriving are Market Sponsor Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Miss Patti with a rocking music event for kids, and Pleasantville's own "House Band" Nannyhagan Creek to round out the morning. To keep on top of over 60 events at the Market throughout the season get to know the website's Calendar page by clicking here. This week garlic scapes, radishes, young garlic, herbs, snow peas, head lettuce, mesclun, beets, broccoli, spinach, rainbow chard, and the first summer squash will be heaped in impressive mounds- the result of warm temperatures, and a week of summery sun.
Sweet
Speaking of sun, strawberries arrived last Saturday after a rainy week. This week's batch will be even sweeter as the berries have had a full week of sun to ripened. Look for quarts of delicious strawberries at Mead Orchards, Breezy Hill Orchards, Madura Farms and Newgate Farms.
Berry Nice
Looking for help from our vendors to arrive at a memorable strawberry moment? Try some of these items: Starting with our farms, you can get a super strawberry shortcake from Newgate Farms to eat at the Market, or packaged to go. You can also get a farm fresh, butter-crust strawberry rhubarb pie from Breezy Hill Orchard. Dutch Desserts has a strawberry rhubarb tart and a mixed berry tart (with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries). Red Barn Bakery creates beautiful organic strawberry rhubarb pies and strawberry whole wheat scones. If scones are your treat, then also consider that Newgate Farms has great berry scones, and All You Knead Bakery has a special strawberry scone of their own this week. Mead Orchards often has strawberry preserves, and Conant Valley Jams has been producing a scrumptious strawberry-rhubarb jam all week. Lastly, if you or your kids love berries but gluten is a problem, Spoonful of Sugar can help with gluten-free strawberry crumb cakes, blueberry fritters, and push pops of cupcake, layered with strawberry frosting. Pretty sweet list, right?
Wild
If your looking for your strawberries to land somewhere less sweet, get wild caught swordfish from Pura Vida Fisheries and try this original and creative recipe from Seasonal Chef blogger Maria Reina: Fresh Herb Swordfish with Market Greens and Strawberries!
Need a Hand With That?
Enjoying the season's harvest, but not enjoying handled plastic bags accumulating in the kitchen, or environment? Shopping at the Market doesn't have to mean loading up on plastic bags. If you want fewer plastic bags in your kitchen and lifestyle, the Market has convenient, sturdy tote bags, made from 100% recycled plastic - and they can be used again and again. Purchase one bag for $3, or two for $5 at the Manager's Tent in the Market.

Phelps HEALTH TIP:
Phelps is involved in helping our community make connections for better health, and in that spirit they have begun providing a series of Phelps Health Tips, beginning with:
"Contrary to popular belief, snacks can help fill in much-needed nutrients (especially for children). An example is yogurt (Butterfield Farm Company!) with fresh berries (strawberries!) and nuts (Tierra Farms!). Another is market celery or carrots (coming soon) dipped in Pickle Licious' yummy hummus".
