BHS Senior Fridakis Named to NYS Athletic Advisory Committee

New York State Public High School Athletic Association selected two student-athlete from each of the 11 sections in New York State.

BHS senior Jacob Fridakis was among the 14 new and eight returning student athletes named to the The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) 2018-19 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from the over 60 that sought membership. The committee is comprised of two student-athlete representatives (one male and one female) from each of the 11 sections in New York State.

Upon learning that he had been selected, Fridakis said, “I applied for the position because I have enjoyed participating in varsity sports at Briarcliff and really enjoyed my previous track season. I also believe that Briarcliff has accomplished so much in sports for such a small school and I would like to share the positive things I have gained and learned from being at Briarcliff and in Section 1 with the committee and the state. I am really excited to work with this committee and am grateful for this fantastic opportunity.”

Briarcliff Director of Athletics Chris Drosopoulos added, “Jacob is incredibly hard working and always manages to foster positive discussions. He is the quintessential scholar-athlete."

According to the NYSPHSAA release, “The SAAC was developed to encourage and facilitate involvement of student-athletes within NYSPHSAA. Over the course of the school year, the committee will discuss topics of concern to high school student-athletes and examine and develop ways to address those concerns to help student-athletes maintain a positive athletic experience. One of the primary goals of the SAAC this year will be to create a mental health initiative to help student-athletes around the state who confront mental health issues. Furthermore, members of NYSPHSAA SAAC hope to expand and create student committees within their own section. Sections IV, VIII, and XI are among the sections who have begun the process.”
