During the first portion of the program, the alumni addressed the senior class, speaking about their choices of postsecondary education, school majors and minors, internships and research experiences, and what led them to their current professions. They discussed mistakes they have made, advice they would have appreciated and challenges they have faced, among other topics. Seniors’ questions, which were received prior to the event, were read by a moderator and answered by the guests.
Based on career preferences, seniors were assigned to one of six classrooms for the second portion of the seminar. Two or three alumni were assigned to each room, based upon their own career choices. Under the supervision of Briarcliff High School staff members, the seniors were encouraged to engage in conversation with the alumni, who delved into their personal stories and fielded questions.
“Even if you think a subject won’t interest you, keep an open mind,” advised alumna Azure Nowara. Regarding the differences between high school and college grading, Sara Horsey added “The numbers don’t mean much in the end. It’s more about applying information and learning from mistakes.”

Alumni Career Experience Day was originated by alumna Amanda Huang (Class of 2007), who contacted Briarcliff Superintendent of Schools James Kaishian with her proposal. Her hope was to assemble a group of fellow alumni who could help seniors gain insight into their future beyond high school. With the assistance of Mr. Kaishian, Principal Debora French, counselor Meredith Safer and the guidance staff, as well as others, Amanda’s dream became a reality.
“We appreciate Amanda Huang’s initiative,” said Ms. French. “We hope to make this an annual event for our seniors.”
