Briarcliff High School Hosts Google Engineer

Briarcliff High School’s Math Honor Society welcomed Corey Kosak to speak about his work as a Google software engineer on Dec. 17.

Prior to working with Google, Kosak completed his undergraduate work at Harvard University and got his doctorate in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. At Google, Kosak works on the Cloud system, attempting to expand and improve upon it. During his visit, he spoke with students about how computer science is used to create Sudoku puzzles.

“He explained how a computer’s way of solving a Sudoku puzzle is very different from how a human would think, so there needs to be a way to create puzzles that can be solved by humans,” Math Honor Society Co-president Allen He said. “Through the session, we were able to gain some insight into how intricate and complex coding something as seemingly simple as Sudoku can be.”

Students also had an opportunity to ask Kosak questions and for advice.

“He told us that it is important to follow the path you care about, and how that will lead you to a place where you will be content,” he added.
