“We wanted to show the students how popular it is to inspire them. It is all over the United States and Pickleball complexes are popping up everywhere,” physical education department coordinator and PE teacher A.J. Thau said.
Students played in doubles as a prelude to a tournament. Next, they discussed how to play correctly and incorrectly to fine-tune their skills, analyzing the game rules and discussing the correct way to serve.
“The winner of the tournament will receive a medal and get their picture on the PE Twitter page,” said physical education teacher Al Meola. “It’s exciting.”
The teachers practice what they preach.
“I play Pickleball myself,” Mr. Meola said. “I love it.”
Students who want to take their Pickleball game skills to the next level are encouraged to come to the high school gym during their lunchtime.
“The gym is open for Pickleball games every day during CLEAR, which is Collaboration, Lunch, Extra Help, Academic Support and Recreation,” Ms. Thau said. “Everyone is welcome.”
