Briarcliff, Pleasantville Among Top Westchester Recycling Communities

The County Executive recognized both villages for recycling at least 70 percent of their waste last year.

Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville are among a group of nine municipalities in Westchester County that recycle at least 70 percent of their waste, County Executive Rob Astorino's office announced this week.

Briarcliff Manor recycled 71 percent of its waste in 2012, while Pleasantville hit the 70 percent mark, the county said in a statement.

The overall county rate came in at 52 percent last year.

Westchester is also seeing a lower garbage amount, with the residential trash volume within the county's refuse district—about 90 percent of Westchester residents live in it—went down for the fifth year in a row. The tons of garbage recorded for 2012 were at 376,890, versus a record of 540,217 for 2007, which means a decrease over the period of 30.2 percent.
