Cheering for Pleasantville's Cross Country and Swim Teams

Crowds came to Pleasantville High School to give a great send-off to 12 athletes who are going to compete in the State Championships.

Crowds came to Pleasantville High School Thursday afternoon to cheer on the Girls Swim Team, Girls Cross Country Team and a Boys Cross Country runner who will compete in the upcoming state championships.

High School students lined the steps and the school’s front circle and were joined by middle schoolers and youngsters from Bedford Road School who marched over to celebrate.

“This is the first time the Pleasantville Girls Cross Country Team has ever gone to the states,” Coach Tim Dirgins said. “And the team is young. There’s one senior, one junior and the rest are eighth and ninth graders. They have all worked incredibly hard. We started practicing back in July.”

After the athletes marched out to Queen’s “We are the Champions” and the crowd finally quieted down, Student Council President Mia Hoxhaj spoke.

“The Briarcliff-Pleasantville-Valhalla-Westlake Tsunami Girls Varsity Swim & Dive Team had an incredible season,” Mia said. “Three of our swimmers will be competing for the NYS Championship meet in Rochester, next Friday.”

When speaking about Alex Searle, Mia said, “This is the second year in a row that Alex has advanced to the State Championships and is widely expected to compete for the individual championship.”

Girls Section 1 Class C Cross Country Champs are: Captain Kate Moroney, senior; Gigi Agati, eleventh grader; ninth graders Clara Shingler, Camilla Browand, Sara Agabob, Lexi Busch and Elizabeth Dean; and Catherine O'Brien, eighth grader.

“What we have achieved this season isn’t small or inconsequential,” Pleasantville schools' Athletic Director Dan Iorio said. “It’s our biggest success yet. The best part is that our athletes and coaches have made it all possible, and we as a community thank you for a job well-done.”
