Common Myths about Physical Therapy

Common Myths about Physical Therapy

Physical therapists have the ability to reduce pain and restore mobility, which can all contribute to improving the quality of life. However, there are some common “myths” or misunderstandings that may discourage someone from trying physical therapy.

Myth: Need a referral to see a physical therapists.
No, for most insurances. In 2006, the “Consumer Choice to Direct Access Physical Therapy” law was passed. Direct Access, for short, allows a patient to seek treatment from a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s referral. Many insurance companies do participate in direct access, except individuals insured under Medicare, Workers Compensation or motor vehicle insurance.
Additionally, with Direct Access, physical therapy has been shown to reduce costs by helping people avoid unnecessary imaging scans, surgery, or prescription medication. Attending physical therapy can also help prevent falls and address conditions before they become chronic issues, which also reduces costs.

Myth: Physical therapy is painful.
Alleviating pain is one of the main goals of physical therapy, whether it is acute or chronic pain, and even post-operative pain. Your physical therapist will reduce your pain and restore your mobility, which will result in improvement in function and a return to your activities of daily living as soon as possible.

Myth: Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents.
Physical Therapists do a lot more than rehabilitate individuals after an injury or surgery. They are skilled at evaluating and screening potential musculoskeletal problems before they lead to more serious injuries or debilitating conditions.
