The 5th Annual Fire & Ice Skate-a-Thon will be held on Friday, March 23rd from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm at the Westchester Skating Academy in Elmsford, NY. The event was founded in 2008 by Briarcliff Manor resident, Nikki Metzger to help her friend who was in pain. In the past four years, this event has raised $30,000 for research on an illness called Erythromelalgia. This year's Skate-a-Thon will benefit people afflicted with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation (EDNF).
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder due to faulty collagen. There are six major types of EDS and they range from mild to life threatening. EDS patients also typically suffer from associated disorders such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
The Fire & Ice Skate-a-Thon is a fun event to raise money for EDNF. To participate, all you need to do is obtain some sponsors, and then come out and skate. There will be door prizes, raffles, and a free hot chocolate for all participants. Community service hours will be provided for students who request it. If you cant join us that evening, please consider sponsoring a participant. For more information, please visit the website, www.fireiceskate.com or email Nikki Metzger at fireiceskate@aol.com
