FILM: CHRISTMAS ON EARTH Muse to Dylan, Warhol, and Allen Ginsberg, Barbara Rubin was an essential part of the downtown art scene in the 1960s, pioneering groundbreaking forms of multimedia projection before renouncing everything to join a Hasidic community. Made when she was only 17 years old, Rubin’s psychedelic extravaganza Christmas on Earth may be the most sexually explicit film of the decade.
Q&A Ara Osterweil Professor of film studies at McGill University. Ara Osterweil, a former member of the JBFC’s education faculty and the world’s scholarly expert on Rubin, she is currently writing a book about film and art in the 1960s.
