Fall's Here, At The Pleasantville Market

the Farmers Market is open every Saturday 8:30am - 1:00pm

Saturday will feel like fall, and the Market will certainly look like fall, with a terrific harvest of squash, crisp apples and hearty mounds of fall vegetables. Some hints of summer remain in the eggplants, tomatoes and corn which are still plentiful. But our days are growing shorter, and our nights are growing cooler. Eating seasonally, one can feel at peace with the transition when considering that October ushers in a series of wonderful, classic fall dishes. Crates and crates of fresh picked apples are arriving to the Market each week. These are the kind of apples which inspire pies, and entries into pie contests. Note that pre-registration for our October 10 Phelps Annual Apple Pie Contest is well underway. We hope you’ll sign up to join in the fun, which starts as a pie contest and then shifts to a community party with slices sold as a fundraiser for the Market. For more information stop by our Manager’s Tent Saturday.

This Week’s Phelps Health Tip:
Fall Veggies Are Powerfully Healthy
“Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens, horseradish, and kale contain the phytochemical indole. Studies show that these foods may help reduce the damage to DNA caused by carcinogens and thus reduce the risk of some cancers.”

NEW Special Event Saturday:
HILLSIDE FOOD DONATION DAY

Since the spring of 2014, the Pleasantville Community Garden and the farmers at the Pleasantville Farmers Market have been partnering with Hillside Food Outreach in an effort to eradicate hunger in our county. Saturday we celebrate that partnership and the generosity of our farmers -- who have to date donated over 6000 lbs of fresh food!

This Saturday Buy An Extra Item Of Produce
For one day this Saturday shoppers have an opportunity to buy an extra item of produce so it can be donated to Hillside too. Volunteers from the Pleasantville Community Garden will ferry all farm-fresh items to Hillside at the conclusion of the Market. Click here to read a great profile on Kathy Purdy, the Executive Director and Founder of the Pleasantville-based charity Hillside Food Outreach, which provides meals for thousands of Westchester residents each year.

Did We Say Enough About Apples?
Mead Orchards and Wright’s Farm are great sources for fall fruit including crisp apples, pears and juicy plums too. Wright’s will add Honeycrisp apples to their table this week, and they have also created a fresh batch of Apple Butter. Mead Orchards jars Apple Sauce too, which is great for school lunches.

Pop by J&A Farm for Popcorn
What’s old is often delightfully new again at the Market. Just as best flavor and unique traits are sought out in all foods present in the Market, those same qualities are present in heirloom popcorn. Gluten-free, and a healthy snack, chefs are seeking it out as a creative start to more adventurous dishes too. Mainly it just tastes great and J&A Farm has plenty this time of year. For some fun reading on the topic of heirloom popcorn click here.

Demi Olive Oil
John Grado of Demi Olive Oil notes that their oil is now being bottled (by him) into darker green bottles with a better screw top. John harvested the olives for this year’s batch of oil on their farm in Greece during December of last year, and oversaw pressing, shipping and all other steps to bring the freshest olive oil to the Market. Stock up so you have what you need for your fall cooking.
