Great Food, Warm Company

Pleasantville Farmers Market is open Saturday, 9:00am - 1:00pm

February has provided some very inconsistent weather: biting winds, surprising snowfalls, oddly warm days and torrential rain. Throughout it all, the Pleasantville Farmers Market dependably provides fresh foods, well-stored staples, and a venue to seek out good company in the cozy environment of the Pleasantville Middle School. Saturday's weather is predicted to be somewhat overcast. So brighten your winter week by visiting the Market Saturday to see friends and shop for great foods.

Phelps Health Tip:

Apple A Day Is Still The Prescription

Lead Sponsor Phelps Hospital Northwell Health shares the following: "Apple consumption has been shown to lower risks associated with both coronary and cardiovascular disease. And eating an apple before you work out may boost your exercise endurance too. Apples deliver an antioxidant called quercetin, which aids endurance by making oxygen more available to your lungs. For an extra boost of energy and a great snack grab an apple!"

Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse: Cultured Butter

Bobolink Dairy creates Cultured Butter using cream from their grass-fed cows. Here's the process to arrive at butter that is cultured: The cream is vat pasteurized, then cultured with farmer Jonathan White's special combination of beneficial microbes. This is similar to how yogurt is made, but in this case using cream, and using more types of beneficial bacteria. The cultured cream is then churned in a batch churn, and the butter is scooped out and packaged. What's left? Buttermilk! And that can be purchased from Bobolink Dairy as well.

Edgwick Farm: Fresh Milk

Edgwick Farm brings very fresh pasteurized goats milk in half gallon containers, every Saturday until the end of October. Goats milk is a good source of protein, and it contains less sugar (lactose), 13% more calcium, 25% more vitamin B6, 47% more vitamin A, and 134% more potassium than regular cow's milk.

Consider Contributing Food

The Market maintains a bin every Saturday so shoppers may "buy an extra item of produce" to contribute to families in need. This week the bin is located in the center of the Market. Volunteers from the Pleasantville Community Garden collect all items at the end of the day, along with donations from farmers, and deliver them promptly to organizations such as Hillside Food Outreach. Since its establishment in June 2014, the Pleasantville Community Garden has donated over 30,000 pounds of fresh food! All this food has gone to kids, adults and seniors who don't have enough. This provides nutrition, which is expensive, but is very needed for people, and our communities, to remain healthy.
