Healthy Life Series Continues in May at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center

Phelps offers the community a wide range of free programs on health-related subjects, screenings and support groups

Monday, May 4 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a make-up kit donated by cosmetic companies. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Tuesday, May 5 - Planning for Your Future: Housing Options as You Age Whether you are in the early stages of planning your retirement or already retired, this program will provide valuable information on the best and most affordable choices for housing. Wednesday, May 6 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. In the Boardroom from 2 -3:30 pm. Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Wednesdays, May 6 and 20 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month from 9:30 – 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 914-366-3220.

Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 15 - Speech-Language Screening for Preschool Children Are you concerned about your child’s speech and language development? If so, call to register for a free speech-language screening with an experienced pediatric speech-language pathologist. Thursday, May 7 from 10:30 am – 12 pm and Friday, May 15, from 1 – 2:30 pm with Kim M. Ventimiglia, MS, CCC-SLP, at the Donald R. Thursdays, May 7 and 21 – Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 – 3:30 pm in the James House. Monday, May 11 – Chronic Cough Screening Do you have a chronic cough that won’t go away? Screenings will be offered for people with chronic cough despite numerous doctor visits, medications and diagnostic tests. Your cough may be caused by silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux disease or LPR) or the irritation of a nerve. Symptoms of silent reflux are excessive throat clearing, voice changes, trouble swallowing, nighttime cough and vocal spasms. Symptoms of an irritated nerve include dryness in the throat or a tickle prior to a cough. Screenings performed by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist, Medical Director, Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders. From 8:45 – 10 am. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12 - Defensive Driving A two-evening certification program that lowers insurance premiums, reduces violation points, and sharpens driving skills. Robert Fogel, instructor, 5:30 – 8:30 pm, in the Auditorium. Fee: $45. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Tuesday, May 12 – Better Breathers Club Learn about the anatomy and physiology of the normal and diseased lung. Susan DiFabio, RRT/CPFT, education coordinator for the pulmonary rehabilitation program. From 12 – 1 pm in the Pulmonary Lab. Call 914-366-3712 to register.

Wednesday, May 13 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors that meets monthly, except for August and December. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. This month participants will receive information on the most commonly used medications, what they are used for and their possible side effects. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level). Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Thursday, May 14 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 11 am to 12:30 pm the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level). Call 914-366-2270 to register.

Tuesday, May 19 – Senior Steps offers health screenings for seniors. This month’s screening is for people with balance problems. Senior Steps meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. To make an appointment, call 914-366-3937.


Thursday, May 28 – Vitality Day Phelps is hosting Vitality Day in recognition of Older Americans Month. It is a free day-long celebration that recognizes all of the contributions seniors have made during their lifetimes. Workshops will cover the following topics: frauds and scams perpetrated against seniors, home-based management of chronic conditions, home safety, community resources for seniors and more. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with various community organizations throughout the afternoon. A light lunch will be served. The event will take place at the James House on the Phelps campus from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Registration required. Call 914-366-3937.
