Healthy Life Series Continues in September at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center
Phelps offers the community a wide range of free programs on health-related subjects, screenings and support groups

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for September follows:
Wednesday, September 2 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. In the Boardroom from 2 -3:30 pm. Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Thursday, September 10 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors that meets monthly, except for August and December. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a topic of interest to seniors and a light exercise program. This month’s topic will be learning about ‘care circles’ and the HeLP program, which helps seniors become more empowered in managing their health and to maintain a more active lifestyle. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level). Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Thursday, September 10 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 11 am to 12:30 pm the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level). Call 914-366-2270 to register.
Friday, September 11 – Alzheimer’s Support Group Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t mean you don’t have to go it alone. Join us and receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully care for someone with dementia. In the 755 Building Room 545 from 10:00 – 11:30 am. Monday, September 14 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a make-up kit donated by cosmetic companies. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Tuesday, September 15 – Senior Steps offers health screenings for seniors on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am. The screenings are held in various locations throughout the hospital. This month will focus on cognitive screening. For more information, call 914-366-3937.
Friday, September 18 - Fall Prevention Falls are the leading cause of emergency room visits and home injuries. Each year, one out of three seniors suffers moderate to severe injuries, leading to nursing home placement. Many falls, however, are preventable. Taking simple steps to prevent falls can help you and those you love stay active and maintain independence. From 9:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Auditorium. Friday, September 25 - Tai Chi Classes (6 non-consecutive classes) Tai chi is a graceful form of exercise that helps reduce stress and is beneficial for a variety of other health conditions. Tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. In the James House on the Phelps campus. Two sessions per date: 9:30 am and 10:30 am, $10 per session. Future class dates: October 2, 16 and 23; November 6 and 13. To register, call 914-366-3937.
Monday, September 28 – Silent Reflux and Cough Screening conducted by Craig Zalvan, MD, Laryngologist, for people who have had a chronic cough for more than six weeks, have excessive throat clearing, feel a lump or burning in the throat, have voice problems, trouble swallowing, or taste acid. Wednesday, September 30 - Spirituality Workshop A free series of workshops on topics of spirituality presented by the Reverend Dr. Carole Johannsen, Coordinator of Pastoral Care at Phelps. September’s topic will be: This Is Your Life: The Critical Place of Life Review in Our Later Years. Narrative psychologists tell us that the telling of our stories is a compelling task for our older years. We will talk about how to tell our stories not only chronologically, but through our spiritual journey. The programs are from 9:00 -10:30 am in the Auditorium.
