Make The Market Better: Customer Survey Time

Pleasantville Farmers Market is open Saturday, 8:30am - 1:00pm

Farmers market shoppers know their input matters. Many items now commonplace at markets began as shopper suggestions to farmers. The Pleasantville Farmers Market also values customer input. Please take a moment now to fill out our annual survey (participants are eligible for a prize drawing of Market Bucks and Market t-shirts!).

A bountiful summer harvest is arriving Saturday with corn, melon, herbs and peaches in the spotlight, as well as tomatoes which are nearing their peak. We have great programming too. There are two Kids Events (9:30-11:00), with Sprout Wellness hosting a yoga activity for children and the Jacob Burns Film Center offering kids a fun scavenger hunt. The Music Series will present the European sounds of Le Nozze di Carlo (10:00-12:00). And to highlight tomatoes, we have a chef demo by Chef Scott Quis of Bedford 234 (10:30-12:00). If you want to preview the chef's recipe for Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho click here.

Food For Thought:

It's National Farmers Market Week, and we're so proud to be part of the growing, national network of markets. August is the right month to feel celebratory about the summer harvest, our Village’s support of it’s community-based market, and especially the efforts of our farmers and food artisans. When chatting with these producers Saturday let them know how much you appreciate what they do!

Using SNAP At The Market

Phelps Health Tip:

Herbs: Fun, Healthy, Delicious

Lead Sponsor Phelps Hospital Northwell Health shares the following: "Herbs are a great way to slide some antioxidants and phytochemicals into your diet. Add them to your salads, add dill to your fresh fish, mint to your cabbage, or basil to your tomatoes. Herbs make your menu more fun, more healthy, and more delicious!"

Tomatoey Tips

For those who want a homemade sauce, but aren't at home to make one this week, consider that Mead Orchards produces a great sauce from their own tomatoes. Trotta Foods also creates their Filleto de Pomodoro sauce with Market plum tomatoes, fresh whole leaf basil and garlic -- all sourced from Market farms. Ed Trotta hopes you'll think of his fresh mozzarella at this time of year, and Nina White of Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse also notes that aged cheeses go wonderfully with tomatoes. To make her case Nina points out that Bobolink's Drumm cheese, with fresh tomato, creates one heck of a grilled cheese (especially if made on their Garlic Rye Levain). This cheese is also fantastic with peaches too! Of course all these ideas really seem top tomato to us.
