This Saturday ideas for Mother’s Day should spring to mind as we welcome a number of vendors with items Mom would love. Shawangunk Growers will have a selection of hardy perennials and herbs - find mom a rare, native, or new perennial for her flower beds. Also visiting with beautiful flowers is Simply Planted Greenhouses. They have planters already set with flowering annuals and herb combinations that would look great on Mom’s deck. Explore through the Market to find additional ideas for Mom, including beeswax soaps and candles from Hudson River Apiaries. Find Mother’s Day brunch options such as a Red Barn Bakery savory tart, or a Dutch Desserts fruit tart. Of course you can also get fresh eggs, bacon, vegetables and meats to go home and make Mom a great meal Sunday too. Whatever your plans are, the Pleasantville Farmers Market can help your time with Mom be extra special this weekend.
Who’s in this week?
Rotation Vendors are specifically listed in the left column of this newsletter. Look to our Map of the Market to see all vendors in this Saturday. Note that Demi Olive Oil will be absent for May, returning in June.
Market To Be A Bit Wild Saturday
Sustainably harvested ramps (aka wild leeks) will be available from Neversink Farm, Cowberry Crossing Farm, and Yellow Bell Farm. Also Conant Valley Jams, which forages wild ramps to make a Ramp Pesto, will have ramps for sale too. Pura Vida Fisheries is always a little wild with its wild-caught fish and fresh shellfish. Enjoy the weekend’s summery weather on the patio with Mom - shuck some oysters, and grill up some delicious fish.
Phelp’s Health Tip: Wild Is Good
“Try wild-foraged and wild-caught items in your diet. Wild greens such ramps tend to have higher levels of phytochemicals. And wild-caught fish and harvested shellfish tend to have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (ie: mackerel, squid, and scallops). When it comes to fats, these are ones you don’t want to cut back on. Your body needs these fatty acids to function.”
Cluck! Cowberry’s Chickens Are Fresh This Week
Cowberry Crossing Farm’s Certified Organic chickens will now be brought to market fresh each week, through late autumn.
Spring Means Asparagus
Madura Farms has fresh, spring asparagus this week. Arrive early to the Market to ensure you get some of this popular item.

Great Outdoor Market and Great Events
After next week’s closure for Pleasantville Day, it’s Opening Day for the Market’s 18th season. With over 55 vendors, 7 nearby parking lots and creative weekly programming, it’s a delicious good time every Saturday - rain or shine.
For 2015 the Market will have super events beginning with these on Opening Day, May 23:
We have a great opening act to kick off another season of Market Sprout programs for kids: the return of Marco the Magician! Marco Frezza’s acclaimed magic show confounds the senses of adults and children. With too much blow-your-mind magic for just one show, Marco has offered to perform at 9:30am and again at 11:00am. Please bring the whole family, all your friends, even distant cousins to help us build a great crowd for Marco. He’ll leave them all guessing. (Note: In addition to offering performances for children, Marco Frezza is an instructor of magic through his site onlinemagicschool.com, and also in private classes. If your kids are interested in learning magic speak with Marco for more information).
Opening a great, new season of Music@ the Market, the Eugene Tyler Band features songwriting influenced by the great rock and country acts of the past 50 years, while also retaining some of the attitude of the modern punk bands that shaped their youth. After building a solid local following, the Eugene Tyler Band is prepped to grow their live and online presence, with a self-titled debut album released in early March 2015, and an acoustic tour to follow suit.
Also May 23, Market Nutritionist Marina Stopler will introduce another series of “Let’s Talk” events. Throughout the summer and fall at the Culinary Tent the Market will have Marina return, as well as host chefs demonstrations and special tastings of seasonal produce.
What A Fine School District It Is
Saturday marks the end of the indoor season. We thank the Pleasantville Union Free School District Board of Education and administration for their generosity, hospitality, and community spirit. It cannot be overstated how much the farmers and area residents appreciated the cozy Middle School, and its dedicated support staff, through such a long cold winter.
