Pleasantville Middle School Geography Bee Champion Crowned

Eight Middle School students - two per grade level - competed in the final round of the school's 6th Annual Middle School Geography Bee.

At the end of several rounds of difficult questions*, seventh grader Alexander Kylander was presented with the winner's medal; eighth grader Joseph Sdao was the runner-up.

The six other finalists included fifth graders Peter Pepdjonovic and Katie Wiley; sixth graders Aiden Kayizzi and Daniel Sadreyev; seventh grader Richik Acharya; and eighth grader Sara O'Leary. All eight finalists received a certificate and a book.

Next up for Alexander: an online qualifying test for the NYS Geography Bee that will be held in Albany this April.

Finalists were selected by a school-wide process that began with written tests in students' social studies classes. The top scorers were invited to participate in qualifying rounds during their lunchtimes, which resulted in two finalists per grade level.

* Example: The Seikan Tunnel connects the island of Hokkaido with what other Japanese island? (Give up? Ask Alexander.)
