THORNWOOD, NY (September 2021) -- The rehabilitation of Thornwood’s James M. Carroll Park took a big step forward with the start of dredging of the park’s pond. The pond area and parking lot at Carroll Park are closed to the public, but the playground at the park remains open to the public and parking on Rolling Hills Road remains open for use. The project is scheduled to be completed in early October.

Recently, the Town of Mount Pleasant installed a bypass system under the north parking lot to reduce the impacts of storm water flows and sediment going into the pond and provide direct access for the water within the Whittier Drive area of the Town to release into the culvert and stream to the north towards the Saw Mill River. The rehabilitation project involves dredging the pond of silt to its original depth, re-establishing the shoreline and creating a sustainable habitat for fish and other wildlife. The additional storage area of the pond will also aid to store more water during storm events.

“We are very excited to be moving ahead with this significant Town project. Carroll Park has seen a substantial increase in usage by our community in recent years. It is vitally important that we continue to update the park as well as add new facilities to the park,” said Town of Mount Pleasant Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi.
