Self-control is the first principle we teach our children starting a Martial Arts class.
Self-control is integral to Taekwondo and living a Black Belt life and represents both a physical and mental self-discipline. Physical self-control is developed through repetition and practice, training to execute Taekwondo techniques efficiently and effectively. Our mind plays an important role in making sure our body performs each exercise successfully. Black Belt self-control is achieved by developing a strong mind and body to accomplish any action in any given situation.
When children learn self-control they stand at attention during class without wiggling, they listen and pay attention to the instructors, they practice their exercises dutifully and perform them successfully. They become great students.

What controls your actions, your heart, your mind, or your friends?
You are out with friends and someone suggests going into a store and stealing some stuff “for fun”. Or you’re out with friends and someone suggests going to the local fast food restaurant or pub and you are dieting. What governs how you act and will you do what is best for YOU?
Controlling your mind can be a difficult thing for many people. Self-control of the mind requires having the inner strength to do what is appropriate in all situations. A Martial Artist will practice physical and mental self-control throughout their training and life.
The Black Belt mind is about knowing who you are and being confident in your ability to approach life with self-control, respect, integrity, indomitable spirit, and perseverance. A Black Belt is mindful. A Black Belt mind allows you to see the positive in every situation and challenge.
The Black Belt mind says No to illegal or illicit activity. The Black Belt mind says, ‘I’d rather get a healthy salad and yogurt vs. a cheeseburger, fries, and a beer’.
