Seven Pleasantville High Seniors Named in National Merit Scholarship Competition

They are among the 50,000 top scorers of the over 1.6 million students who took the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.

Allegra Copland and Olivia DeMeo attained Semifinalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program and will continue in the competition for 7500 scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be awarded in Spring 2018.

Hannah Collins, Michael Kokkat, Kayley Lewis, Arthur Rogers, and Andrew Song were named Commended Students.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation identified the 50,000 top scorers (211 or above) of the over 1.6 million high school students who took the qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT) in October 2016. Of that group, approximately 16,000 are designated as Semifinalists and the remaining 34,000 are named Commended Students.

Semifinalists are selected on a state representational basis; that is, the number of Semifinalists for a state is proportional to that state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. For example, a student with a score of 220 might be a Semifinalist in one state, but a Commended Student in another; and vice versa.
