Indoor Cycling Studio Opens in Briarcliff Manor
The owner of a new indoor stationary cycle studio calls the village the "fitness capital of Westchester."
As Barry Coleman watched the popularity of indoor cycling classes soar over the last few years, he contemplated opening his own studio that offered this comprehensive workout. The opportune moment came this year in Briarcliff Manor and opened its doors on North State Road in October.
Coleman, originally from Yonkers, is a lifelong fitness advocate who has taught in health clubs throughout Westchester and Putnam counties. He talked with Patch about opening a niche business, despite the challenging economic climate.
Patch: Why did you decide to open your indoor cycling studio with so many other workout options in the area?

Coleman: I noticed in the past few years that the number one, most popular cardio exercise was [indoor cycling]. My classes were extremely popular: standing–room only with a wait list. I knew that nothing else gives you a better cardio workout. [Indoor cycling] studios were springing up in Manhattan and I felt that there would be a strong demand in Westchester.
In large clubs, people can feel like they are in a maze: they might go right for the treadmill or keep to a certain class—my studio is an intimate experience and I really think small is the way to go. We eliminate the maze and you get a targeted workout—not to mention free water and free fruit!

Patch: What is the appeal of indoor cycling?
Coleman: Well, when you combine an [indoor cycling] class (a 45-minute or one-hour ride) with Kinesis instruction, you are going to be stronger, leaner and toner with increased core strength and a boosted metabolism.
Kinesis simply refers to supporting ourselves for daily movements—where the premise is to fatigue targeted muscle areas with light weights and increased repetitions in order to strengthen and define them. We offer Kinesis and [stationary cycling] together and people want those results.
Patch: Why Briarcliff Manor?
Coleman: The town is beautiful and it is really becoming the fitness capital of Westchester. There is , , a Zumba studio, and now Spinsational. There are even babysitting services right nearby all of these businesses.
Patch: Do you have to be super-fit to go to a class at Spinsational?
Coleman: It is really suitable for anyone. There is no jarring of the joints; the motion is smooth and the rider can go at their own pace and set the tension. The music creates the environment and the instructor fills in the rest.
Patch: How is business so far?
Coleman: Each day people trickle in—and the word is getting out. I believe the economy has to get better and right now people want bang for their buck. That is what they get in this workout.
Spinsational does not charge a membership fee. Cycling and kinesis classes start at $20 each.
