Students Combine Technology And Sculpture To Create Awareness About The Environment

Briarcliff High School students are lending a hand to help the environment. Literally.

In April – Earth Month – students in Jessica Dubin’s sculpture elective class created a project with the theme of “hands up for the environment” and made a display of casts of arms to demonstrate that everyone is ‘lending a hand.’

Students used plaster and gauze to cast their hands and arms. They also researched environmental topics that interested them and created designs that illustrated subjects related to their chosen topic.

When the casts were ready, students painted them with the design they had made. They also each created podcasts and recorded information about the research they had done, including QR codes that allow students and faculty to listen to them.

Some of the subjects featured were ethical clothing and fashion, air pollution, danger of plastics, protecting bees and endangered species, global warming, protecting the oceans and coral reefs and sustainable food.

“Students chose to call their project ‘helping hands,’” said Ms. Dubin. “They hope to make our world a better place by communicating what they have learned about environmental issues that affect everybody.”

The project can be viewed in the corridor behind the library, leading to the engineering, art and guidance wing.
