Summer Flavor

Pleasantville Farmers Market: Saturday 8:30am-1:00pm. Corn, peaches, blueberries -they're all in!

Harvest Rolling In
Over the next four weeks summer makes its statement in mounds of fresh, beautiful foods. Each week the fruit and produce brought to market reminds us of the season’s potential to surprise. Lke seeing friends you haven’t seen in a year, there are the blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries; there are the perfect cucumbers to slice, salt and eat while standing in the kitchen; there are the first eggplants, plums and tomatoes; there are sunflowers more cheery than we recalled, crisp head lettuces we thought about all winter, and fresh herbs to add even more flavor to the offerings at the Pleasantville Farmers Market. Need a visual? Our official Market Photographer, Chad David Kraus, has visited the Market over the last month to assemble a nice album of images which you can enjoy by clicking here.

Phelps Health Tip
Classic Advice: Eat Your Vegetables

Market Lead Sponsor, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, and moms everywhere, have always pointed out that vegetables are good for you.

“Based on some estimates, vegetables supply over 50% of vitamins C and A, and much of our B6, magnesium, niacin, thiamin, and iron. Eating a variety of seasonal plant foods, which supply these and many more nutrients, can help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.”

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center will have a representative visiting the Market Saturday. Stop by to share your appreciation of their support for the Market and learn about the many services and programs they offer just 4.5 miles down the road from Pleasantville.

Yes Indeed: Mead’s Got Peaches, Plums & Corn
Mead Orchards will have peaches and early plums Saturday, as well as their first corn of the season.

Whitecliff Vineyard Arrives Saturday
Whitecliff Vineyard just received a new award for their much-awarded Traminette: 45 judges at the San Francisco International Wine Competition gave it a unanimous Double Gold Medal, Best in Class, and a 94 point rating. Taste this very refreshing summer wine at the Market, and take a bottle home to pair with any spicy or strongly flavored dish.

Savory Puffed Pastries
Red Barn Bakery has delicious, savory puff pastries with organic vegetable fillings. Stop by early to get one with either Tomato Basil Pesto, Zucchini Leek Tomato, or Mushroom Goat Cheese. Serious about dessert? Red Barn will also have organic blueberry pies.

Cowberry: Fresh Broccoli Is Better
Cowberry Crossing Farm has a huge amount of FRESH, Certified Organic broccoli ready for Saturday’s market. They note that the long-stored and long-traveled broccoli often found in stores can be bitter and thus turn children against this healthy vegetable. But fresh broccoli, like you will see at the Market, is in fact super sweet. Bring some home and see the kids eat it up!

Full Sour Means Full Flavor
Pickle Licious rightly points out: “When it comes to pickles, full-sours are where it’s at!” Cured to the max to deliver a big sour taste these pickles are a garlic lover’s paradise. This week also enjoy that full-sours are $1.00 OFF.

Pura Vida Fisheries
No need to drive to Maine or Cape Cod or the Hamptons for a plate of super fresh fish. Pura Vida Fisheries brings fresh fish to the Market every week --just caught, and ready for the grill or pan. Ask what’s new each week as the catch is always changing with the seasons.
