Community Mourns Firefighter Dead In Home Fire On Thanksgiving

Visitation and departmental service are Sunday and a funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday.

THORNWOOD, NY — The community is mourning Sean Carroll, 26, who died on Thanksgiving in a fire at his family's home. Carroll was a volunteer firefighter with the Thornwood Fire Department.

The fire broke out early Thursday morning in the basement and spread to the upper floors of the Warren Avenue home. Firefighters were able to wake up and evacuate Teresa Carroll and Connor Carroll. Sean Carroll was asleep in the basement. He was pronounced dead at Westchester Medical Center.

Thornwood received assistance from Briarcliff Manor, Elmsford, Hawthorne, Ossining, Pleasantville and Valhalla.

Sean, his brother Matt and his father Richard Carroll are all members of the Thornwood Fire Department. His father is a sergeant with the Rye Brook Police Department and has served the community for over 30 years. Matt Carroll is also an FDNY firefighter. In addition to the tragic loss, the Carrolls have been displaced by the house fire.

An online fundraiser set up by the Rye Brook Police Benevolent Association for the Carroll family has already raised $110,744.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville, with departmental services at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Church, 180 Broadhurst Ave., in Hawthorne, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
