United Water to Activate New Water Main Dec. 10 in Eastchester

Customers may experience some temporarily water discoloration. To clear it, run the cold water in the tub for a few minutes.

The following announcement is from United Water:

United Water will put a new section of water main into service on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The new pipe will connect an existing 20-inch main to a 24-inch main and enhance the reliability of water service. In addition, new sections of 16-inch and 12-inch water mains will also be placed into service.

“We want to advise our customers in New Rochelle and Eastchester that they may experience occasional periods of discolored water during the first 24 hours,” said Lynda DiMenna, manager of United Water New Rochelle. “We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.”

Even though the water may be discolored, DiMenna noted that it continues to meet state and federal drinking water standards. The change in color is caused by iron and manganese sediment and has no health impact. Understandably, customers may prefer to wait until the water clears before using it for drinking, cooking or washing clothes or dishes.

DiMenna suggested that customers fill containers with water on Tuesday evening and put them in the refrigerator for use on Wednesday.

Customers who have discolored water should run the cold water in the bath tub for two to three minutes. If the water does not clear, wait another hour or two and repeat the process. After the water clears, flush the cold water faucets throughout the house. If the water doesn’t clear after a few hours, contact United Water at 914-632-6900.

DiMenna explained that the new interconnection is part of a $400,000.00 capital investment project and gives the company greater flexibility to re-direct water during times of high demand or when water mains are out of service for maintenance. As part of the project, United Water also created district meter areas which enable the company to more accurately identify leaks and to detect theft of service which can drive up water bills or create health and safety problems.
