Warm Weather, Lively Entertainment at Farmers' Market Opening

Saturday morning event runs through mid-December.

A jazz band played as the ribbon was cut by Peter Rogovin, officially opening the Saturday morning at Memorial Plaza.

Eight new merchants will be among the 35 different vendors who will appear on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. through December 17, selling vegetables, desserts, flowers, plants, breads, pickles and other items.

Rogovin, chair of the Pleasantville Farmers' Market Committee, heads up a team of volunteers who plan everything for the market from layout to entertainment, culinary programs to community partnerships.

This year, the committee has secure a larger seating area with 10 tables where shoppers can sit and enjoy the entertainment and environment of the market all season long, said Rogovin, who oversaw many of the changes the market saw that .

"We are very pleased with the growth, but even more pleased that this has become a community destination," he said in an email. "Our growth did not come from attracting people from a larger area; it come mostly from people who live in Pleasantville deciding that this is a fun place to start their Saturday, this is where their neighbors and friends are."

The market may also have additional parking for patrons later in the season, as the village recently completed the purchase of the Lane Plumbing property (located behind the Post Office) and plan to turn it, at least temporarily, into a parking structure for the downtown.

"We are relaxed market, and we want to stay that way," said Rogovin.

Next Week at the Farmers' Market:

Singer/songwriter Susan Kane, who has performed at the market in the past, will be back with a mix of folk/blues/country tunes to liven up the shopping experience.

For the younger crowd, Mario the Magician will return to liven the mood of the market with his quick wit and tricks at 10 a.m.. Mozzarella the Dove will also be accompanying Mario.
