Wednesday Afternoon: School Updates; Libraries Open

Some of the latest post-Sandy information for Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville.

Quite a few developments in Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville have come to light this afternoon.

Pleasantville schools will open on Thursday on a two-hour delay schedule, according to an alert from Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter.

However, "No child will be penalized for missing school tomorrow due to weather related difficulties."

While most village streets are clear, Fox-Alter noted, "If your path to school involves walking on Bedford Road between Guion and Academy, please be advised that a large tree is blocking that side walk. Do not walk in the street. Use the crosswalks at Romer and Academy."

The Pocantico Hills Central School will remain closed Thursday and Friday.

The Mount Pleasant Public Library is open and packed, said Director John Fearon. With outlets and WiFi abound, the space is filling up quickly and will be open to residents until 8 p.m. today, he said.

The Briarcliff Manor Public Library is also open, however, there is no wireless internet available. It is on a normal schedule.

"Our power is on and the internet is working on our public computers only," the library said in a statement. "Wireless is currently down. The Library's phone is also not working."

In Briarcliff Manor, "At least 30 roads are blocked with trees and/or downed power lines," Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said this afternoon.

In addition, he said the village is now "telling everyone to please keep kids and family at home."

Police will be out on the streets today directing residents to stay or return home.

In Pleasantville, the DPW is operating on a holiday pickup schedule this week. In Briarcliff Manor, "Based on worker availability, the DPW will be picking up of the debris by types of material virtually 7 days a week," Zegarelli said.

Briarcliff Manor's Recreation Department does not have phone service, but is open for walk-ins during regular hours. 

All village fields in Briarcliff Manor remain closed; daytime play only at the platform tennis courts is permitted.
